Assignment 1- Investigation

For this assignment we had to investigate past and current work in the mediums of music video, graphic design and music recording. Compare and contrast the work of two practitioners. Deliver an illustrated PowerPoint presentation of a maximum ten minutes. I wrote an essay as well as the presentation.

For assignment one we had to investigate a form of capture and present the results. We had to work on our own, we had to investigate past and current work in the mediums of music videos, graphic design and music recording. We had to de-construct at least one music video, recording or cover image for each practitioner to support our analysis. Then we had to compare and contrast the work of our two practitioners. Who the practitioners were inspired by, past, techniques, materials, last 5 years, historical contrast, local area? Research and then feedback to the rest of the class. We had to make sure our investigation explained the following:
The techniques and technology used by the two practitioners for each medium.
How previous work differs from current work.
Why previous work differs from current work.
How technologies and techniques vary from one example to another.
How practices, methods and techniques have changed over time.
Which techniques and methods have found interesting and inspiring.

We were given 6 weeks to complete this task, to add in as much information as possible and to aim to take a minimum of 5 minutes presenting it to the rest of the class down in Zennor lecture theatre.
I chose to do my research on two album cover artists. I chose Andy Warhol from the past and Anton Corbijn from now.
I started off my presentation with an introduction explaining what album covers are and what the purpose of them are.

Here is a screen shot of what this introduction looked like in my presentation.
The information I got for this slide was from Wikipedia.
Just explaining what album covers are designed for and why they are used.

The next slide for my presentation was introducing my practitioners.
I gave a few facts about my practitioner from the past, Andy Warhol.
And a few about my practitioner from now, Anton Corbijn.
I also placed a picture introducing what they both look like and a selected album cover from each. Demonstrating what each practitioner can do, and there styles.

The next slide was about and introducing Andy Warhol.
I wrote in this slide, some more in-depth details about Warhol. When he was born and when he died. The types of industries he worked for. And when he started and finished certain eras of work. Also I wrote a little about who Warhol worked with in his life. And the important bit of how he got introduced into music and making album covers. Warhol used a special machine to manufacture these covers (one of the causes of the album's delayed release), but
Warhol included the Velvet Underground in the
Warhol used a very smooth painting method so the artwork almost did not look hand-made. The paintings looked like they came out the same factory that made the soup cans. No one had ever seen art like this. Warhol also made paintings using images such as Coca Cola bottles, dollar symbols, and popular cleaning products. He took the most everyday objects and turned them into fine art.
The next slide was about and introducing Anton Corbijn.
MGM paid for costs figuring that any ties to Warhol would boost sales of the album. Warhol collaborated with Reed's influential New York rock band The Velvet Underground in 1965, and designed the famous cover for The Velvet Underground & Nico, the band's debut album. The album cover consisted of a plastic yellow banana that the listener could actually peel off to reveal a flesh-hued version of the banana. Warhol also designed the album cover for The Rolling Stones' album Sticky Fingers.Exploding Plastic Inevitable, a spectacle that combined art, rock, Warhol films and dancers of all kinds, as well as live S&M enactments and imagery. The Velvet Underground and EPI used the Factory as a place to rehearse, though the definition of "rehearsal" should only be taken loosely. In this slide I explain about Corbijn. I contrast who he works with and Warhol. And his styles and also the industries he works in.He is not one of those photographers who lugs around a mountain of equipment. All he needs are two Hasselblad cameras (a 501CM and a 503CW) and three lenses (60, 80 and 120 mm). His philosophy is very simple: no tripod and no studio, just available light and a hand-held camera.

The next slide was another one about Warhol. I explained how his painting tangled into his album covers. And how he used those techniques.

This is the slide I gave a bit more depth into the life of Corbijn. And I explained one of the things he has done. He made the back cover of the soundtrack to into the wild, picturing Eddie Vedder (pearl jam).

Here I explained and compared Warhol and Corbijn. There isn’t a lot to compare as both artists were and are individuals and have different techniques and favour different industries.

I hope you enjoyed reading about Warhol and Corbijn. And now no a lot about the two.
